Master Chef 4-H Member Earns 2nd Cooking Win

Somerset County Member Places 1st in the 2022 Virtual 4-H NJ Cooking Challenge

Congratulations to Tess Sushko of the Master Chefs 4-H Club on placing 1st in the Individual Junior division in the NJ 4-H Virtual Cooking Challenge held Saturday, March 19th!

4-H members from Monmouth & Somerset counties had to create a complete meal following MyPlate guidelines, using a secret ingredient in 45 minutes. Contestants were judged on food safety, preparation, time management, knowledge of MyPlate, appearance of food, and creativity.

The secret ingredient for the Individual Juniors was apple. Tess, a 6th grader, earned the top honor with an apple chicken dish, in which she baked apples and honey to top the chicken. It is one of her family's favorite dishes. Tess will continue on in the National 4-H Virtual Cooking Challenge next month.

Jessica Neal, a 4th grader and member of several Somerset County clubs including Clover Ensemble, placed 2nd in the cooking challenge and used her creativity to make an apple rice cake dish, which her whole family enjoyed for lunch!

Tess is strong competitor in cooking challenges, Earlier this year, Tess and Ella Ziolkowski placed 1st in the Annual NJ 4-H Cupcake Wars with a delicious and creative “Winter Wonderland” cupcake. Tess was also selected as an Individual Division Winner in the 2022 4-H Top Chef Challenge, hosted virtually by Middlesex County 4-H, for her pepperoni bread.
