Combined sewer overflows (CSO's), have been in use since the middle 1800's in many large American cities including 21 cities in New Jersey. Initially, they were thought to be a hygienic solution to open-pit sewers. Now these systems are outdated and cause for public and ecological health concerns. The EPA has mandated that all US cities with CSOs eliminate or reduce their overflows. So, what are New Jersey cities doing to reduce their CSOs and what can YOU do to help make this work as sustainable as possible?
